Class Overview
On Tuesday (October 22, 2024), our group visited the IIUM Gallery to learn more about the relationship between Maqasid Shariah and sustainable development. This is our first visit, and there is a great deal of history, accomplishments, organization, and so on. We can see that our rectors, president, and all involved in the development of this university are working extremely hard to attain their goals. What Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development have in common is:
Creating an Islamic university, as included by Hifz Al-Din (RELIGION), can enhance our understanding of Islam in contemporary culture. This is something we can relate to (SDG4): quality education.
Other than that,Among the discoveries relevant to our topic lineage is a book titled "Marriege in Islam."One of the characteristics of hifzu nasl is the establishment of women's rights through the practice of fasakh, which is offered to women. That point relates to (SDG 5), which is gender equality.
Lastly,Hifz nafs, or self-preservation, is a basic principle in Islamic teachings that IIUM promotes through its holistic educational approach. Renowned graduates, such as Bro Amin Idris, demonstrate this notion by utilizing their positions to encourage self-awareness and ethical behavior. His journey demonstrates the power of mixing hifz nafs with modern media, emphasizing the potential of well-rounded education based on Islamic beliefs.
Personal Reflection
HIFZ AL-DIN (RELIGION)
This is the principle part of Islamic philosophy, is to protect religion. It leads to freedom to practice religion as well as protection of it, hence making people practice their religion at their will without force and obstruction. To me, this rule resonates deeply as a reminder of the sacredness of spiritual expression and the significance of allowing the religious realm to grow within the wider scope of Islam's moral and ethical teachings. It reflects an attitude of not shying away from diversity or coexistence, to place Islam, because Islam also considers other religions. I aspire to this end as a faithful practitioner of my faith in a pluralistic society, honouring the right of others to do the same, while fostering appreciation and tolerance.
HIFZ AL-NASB (LINEAGE)
Preserving lineage for sharia purposes includes preserving family structure, marriage, and lineage. It emphasizes the sanctity of marriage, the protection of offspring, and the moral responsibility to maintain a healthy family system. Given this, it becomes clear that a strong family is the foundation of a just society. Islam's emphasis on heredity is not only biological but also ethical, ensuring that children grow up in an environment that promotes their moral and emotional well-being. For me, this principle highlights the need to cultivate relationships with responsibility and compassion, ensuring that future generations inherit not only their biological heritage, but also the ethics of kindness, love and justice.
HIFZ AL-NAFS (LIFE)
Purity of life is an important goal in Islam. Every human life has value and should therefore be protected and preserved regardless of race, social background or creed. This section of Maqasid al-Sharia encourages protecting people from physical harm as well as providing the basic necessities of life such as food, shelter, and health care. Personally, this idea instilled a strong sense of responsibility to protect not only my life, but also the lives of others. He emphasized the importance of compassion, understanding and helping those in need, reminding us that human life is God's most precious gift and must be treated with care and respect.
Application Of Learning
Application of Hifz al-Din (Religious Preservation)
Personal Practice: Use reflection and self-discipline to build a relationship with God while applying Islamic principles in daily behavior such as prayer, charity and noble character.
Application of Hifz al-Nasl (Lineage Preservation)
Personal Practice: Use reflection and self-discipline to build a relationship with God while applying Islamic principles in daily behavior such as prayer, charity and noble character.
Application of Hifz al-Nasl (Lineage Preservation)
Social Responsibility: Taking a stand against adultery, child neglect and other forms of abuse that undermine family integrity. Advocate for policies that promote child well-being, responsible parenting and the protection of family rights.
Application of Hifz al-Nafs (Life Preservation)
Caring for others: Protecting life requires consideration of the needs of others, such as providing access to health care, supporting initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, and helping vulnerable groups in society. It also needs volunteers for humanitarian projects and donations for health and safety purposes.
Conclusion
Considering these three tenets of Maqasid al-Sharia has made me feel deeply and intricately devoted to society. They maintain a strong connection between my spiritual growth and well-being and the welfare of others. To achieve this, one must lead a balanced life in which all lives are valued, families and communities are supported, and religion is practiced freely and peacefully. Knowing that by acting morally, maintaining the rule of law, and making constructive contributions to society, I am not only carrying out my religious duties but also my human responsibilities, which inspires me to do so.
